One month after the tsunami and earthquake in Japan on March 11, 2011, officials have begun to compare the nuclear disaster that it created will reach levels comparable to the 1986 Chernobyl explosion (see the New York Times article here). The potential widespread environmental and health effects that come attached to that announcement makes recognizing Earth Day, celebrated on April 22, even more important.

The workplace is a great place to launch efforts to help observe and celebrate Earth Day because of the ability to impact large groups easily.

The senseless and horrific shootings in Tucson, AZ that left 9 people dead and 16 seriously wounded, including Representative Gabby Giffords, have caused all of us to pause and consider some troubling aspects of modern life in the Unites States. In the weeks and months ahead, citizens, journalists, commentators and elected officials will engage in much needed debate about our gun laws, the failures of our public mental health system and the powerful impact that words and images can have on our politics and public discourse. However, one thing that seems absent from this discourse so far is what employers should be doing to prepare for the aftermath of traumas that affect their workplace (after all, Rep. Giffords and her staff were at work, doing their job of engaging with, and listening to, constituents).

Dawn MotovidlakThis first Workplace Wellness blog is dedicated to the people of Louisiana, whose continued perseverance in the face of disaster never fails to inspire me.

Shortly after the BP oil spill on April 20, 2010, I travelled to Lafayette to visit our Southern Region Headquarters and to personally experience the effects of the disaster on the Lafayette area business community. What I saw was both inspiring and sad. On one level, it seemed to bring employees closer because of the shared impact and their reliance on each other for support. On another level, the emotional impact was mounting.
